As you prepare for your move you might be tempted to throw things away or keep things you might not need. There are certain things that don’t make sense to transport between homes because they should be replaced or they won’t have a spot in your new home due to downsizing. There are also things that should be kept so you don’t have extra expense of replacing these items.

Here’s a list you can use to make sure you’re making the most out of what you have and letting go of what you don’t need.
Things you should keep:
-
Cleaning supplies – It may seem easier to buy new ones, but if you add up all of the supplies you use, it could be an overwhelming expense. Decide what needs to be replaced and what can continue to be used in your new home.
-
Curtain rods – Whether it’s for drapes in your living room or your shower curtain rod, the price of replacing these can add up. If you paid the money to put them there, take them with you!
-
Hardware – Hold onto extra screws, nuts, bolts and nails. You can reuse those at the next house and save yourself some money instead of buying new boxes of hardware.
-
Perishables – The cost of replacing condiments and other assorted foods can be more than you would expect. Make the extra effort to pack these items up on moving day and save yourself that unnecessary expense.

Things you should get rid of:
-
Toilet brushes – When is the last time you replaced your toilet bowl brush? Chances are, too long ago. Throw those old ones out and buy new ones; they are inexpensive and can harbor bacteria
-
Clothing – In the weeks leading up to your move, decide which clothes you really wear and which have been hanging around your closet for far too long. That way you’re not moving items that you won’t use.
-
Books – We all tend to hold onto books that we may never read again. Consider reselling them at a used bookstore or donating them. Keep your favorites, but let go of the ones you know you won’t be reading anytime soon.
-
Unnecessary records – If you’ve been holding onto bank records or other financial documents that you don’t need, shred and get rid of them. This lessens the chance of them getting lost and falling into the wrong hands.
As a moving company, we can help you make sure you don’t leave anything behind. The most forgotten items are things in low cupboards and closets that aren’t used often. Make sure to do one final sweep as you leave your old home to make sure you haven’t left anything behind.
